Cracked Gesso effect on furniture
Howdy framers
I'chiliad a cabinetmaker based in Bristol and I am struggling to replicate a 'croaky' result end on some timber article of furniture. I am trying to match a sample sent to me by the customer (encounter fastened image: sample from customer). At outset I thought information technology was a craquelure lacquer, but later on experimenting with unlike varnishes and not getting the results I wanted, I did a flake of searching on the web and found this image entitled 'cracked gesso' nowi recall it could be a 'cracked gesso' base layer with colour launder over the top (see epitome 'cracked gesso')
I take been experimenting using 'uncle bob'due south crackle gesso recipe' I establish http://www.thepaginator.com/Uploadfile/ ... 249-19.swf
but haven't had the result I want even so - much smaller antique looking cracks.
If whatever of y'all could signal me in the right direction in achieving this finish, I would exist very grateful. Thanks. Matt

Re: Cracked Gesso effect on furniture
Welcome Matt.
One mode is to comprehend canvas with gesso, prissy and thick and when it's dried, stretch it viciously. Then glue the canvass to whatever surface. This might work meliorate on different fabrics. Every bit with all of these things you have to experiment a bit.
I've tried various proprietary kits and they do work upward to a point just establish them very unpredictable. The varnish stuff tends to produce very fine cracks. Inappreciably noticeable. The best i I tried is the one that needs a heat gun to activate it, only fifty-fifty that is tricky to do.
I'g sure a few others will be along after with some arcane knowledge......

Re: Cracked Gesso outcome on furniture
Thanks prospero.
In an ideal world I'd like to use the finish/gesso directly onto finished furniture panels and mouldings and so accept it crack afterwards. Is this even possible?!? See prototype below of a console which must be cracked on the furniture - I tin can't believe they can utilise this to the curves afterwards.

Re: Croaky Gesso outcome on furniture
Must admit I have only dabbled in this technique. I think the effect is achieved by applying a quick-drying paint/varnish over a slower-drying one. Or perhaps the other fashion round...... In any case I retrieve the timing is fairly disquisitional.

Yeah, I've tried the dissimilar drying varnishes technique. Yous become cracks, only more like separations/gaps - a flake like cleaved artic ice moving apart. What I'one thousand subsequently is a croaky await but very small or no gaps. Tough one eh!

Yeah. I think that's called 'alligatoring' in the trade. Merely watched a yootoob clip where a thinned PVA was used between two paint coats.
I would love to know how the nice even cracking could be done. I will discover out. Y'all've set me off at present.

Re: Croaky Gesso consequence on piece of furniture
Looks to me similar a end that is achieved past putting a coat on top of a coat that is not fully cured, I call up these were first noticed when heavily glutinous undercoats did not fully dry out but were skinned over before the top glaze to exist practical. The methods I was told near, when at that place were nevertheless restorers around when they had contact with the generation, who created the mistakes described methods based on this principle.
Never really got to the bottom of some of the patent recipes that was supposed to emulate this effect, but those usually produce a far coarser fracturing than the slower shrinking over historic period that creates very fine lines, that would not exist noticed if the colour of the undercoat matches the overcoat , paint a different colour black or redlead under the top glaze and all the same fine the shrinkage you lot volition see it.
I used to buy a prepared formula from Morrells in Stockport that created a cracked finish very coarse and obvious but that is what the client wanted an evidently aged product.
The painters rule 'never put water base onto oil base of operations' is club in my memory somewhere, but modern water based acrylics do stick to oil based paints. When they are fast dried over a well skinned over oil base they crack, if sealed over with a varnish the whole stop stays in place, I recollect, certainly for the period of time that an interior designer expects the effect to terminal for.
But what practice you wait from recreating a end that is based on bad preparation in the first place .

Many many years ago I learned that adding corn starch to the mixture (peradventure rice or irish potato likewise) is one method to use. You will have to experiment with the % of starch.
Brand a batch of traditional gesso adding the starch. Apply warm as usual, allow dry out and sand. Go over the surface with a oestrus gun and it volition scissure the surface.
